How CPB Uses Windows Location Services Over Wi-Fi

To optimize CPU usage and minimize unnecessary system overhead, the 911Cellular Computer Panic Button (CPB) uses event-based polling for Windows Location Services on Wi-Fi-connected devices.

Rather than constantly requesting location updates in the background, the software listens for specific system events to refresh its coordinates.

Ethernet Devices: Devices connected via wired Ethernet do not use this logic and operate on standard polling regardless of version.

Location Service Trigger Events (v8.3.1+)

For devices on Wi-Fi, CPB version 8.3.1 and above requests location updates exclusively during the following scenarios:

  1. Application Launch & Boot: When the software first starts or the OS boots.
  2. Power Events: Whenever the machine wakes from Sleep or Hibernate.
  3. Session Unlocks: When a user unlocks the Windows lock screen.
  4. Network Interface Changes: When a network transition is detected (e.g., unplugging Ethernet so the machine switches to Wi-Fi).
  5. Diagnostic Mode: While a user or technician keeps the CPB "Details" window open, location requests run continuously to assist with troubleshooting.

Expected Behavior When Moving Devices

Because location refreshes depend on specific triggers, physical movement alone does not automatically update location coordinates if the session remains static.

  • Scenario: A user carries an open, active laptop from Building A to Building B without closing the lid or locking the screen.
  • Result: The reported location remains set to Building A until a trigger occurs.
  • Resolution: The location automatically refreshes as soon as the user:
    • Locks and unlocks the screen.
    • Closes and reopens the lid (triggering Sleep/Wake).
    • Switches Wi-Fi networks or disconnects from Ethernet.
