What Happens If My Mobile Safety Timer Expires?
The 911Cellular Mobile Safety App (including supported CampusShield, HealthGuard, and organization-branded apps) when your organization has enabled Safety Timer. Safety Timer is for individual user accounts; shared accounts are not supported.
What is a Safety Timer?A Safety Timer lets you set a time limit for an activity, such as traveling between buildings or working alone. You can select personal emergency contacts. If your organization has enabled an Emergency Services option, you may also be able to include its designated response contact for that specific timer.
A Safety Timer is not the same as immediately activating an emergency panic button. What happens if a timer expires depends on your selected contacts, the organization's settings, and whether your location is eligible for escalation.
Before starting a timer- Confirm you are signed in with your own Mobile Safety App account and that Safety Timer is available.
- Enable the location permissions required by your organization. Available location data may be approximate, stale, or unavailable.
- Make sure your selected personal emergency contacts have correct contact details. Choosing personal contacts does not automatically enable a responder or emergency-services workflow.
- If you need immediate help, follow your organization's emergency procedures or call the appropriate emergency number. Do not wait for a timer to expire.
- Open Safety Timer in the Mobile Safety App. The exact tile or screen label may vary by app configuration.
- Enter a brief activity description and set a duration. The currently documented minimum is five minutes.
- Select any personal contacts you want notified.
- If a Security or Emergency Services contact option is offered, select it only if you want it included for this timer. Your administrator enabling the option does not mean it is automatically selected.
- Start the timer and confirm that the app indicates it was successfully created. Seeing a countdown alone is not proof that the timer registered.
- Before it expires, use the app to extend the timer or resolve it when your activity is complete. Confirm the update succeeds; extending or resolving a timer requires a successful connection to the service.
IMPORTANT LIMIT The documented extension rule does not allow the remaining time plus a requested extension to exceed two hours.
What happens at expiration? When a timer expires without being resolved, the system can send expiration messages to selected personal contacts, depending on the contact choices and the organization's configuration.
If your organization enabled Emergency Services, you selected that option for this timer, and the timer qualifies under its geofence or watch-group rules, expiration can also create a panic incident and start the configured emergency response workflow.
IMPORTANT An expired timer does not automatically prove that 911 was called, a dispatcher received an incident, or any contact received a message. Delivery and response depend on configuration and receiving systems.
What if my phone loses power or service?Once a timer has been registered successfully, losing phone power or connectivity does not automatically resolve it. The timer can still expire, and the system may rely on the last location it successfully received. That location may no longer be current.
To extend or resolve the timer, reconnect and make sure the app confirms your change. Mobile permissions, the operating system, connectivity, and device state can affect location updates during an active timer.
Why did Emergency Services not appear or activate?- Your organization may not have enabled the Emergency Services option for Safety Timer.
- You may not have selected the designated response contact when starting that timer.
- The timer may have started outside a supported geofence or eligible watch-group area.
- The app or phone may not have supplied usable location information.
- The timer may have expired without completing an expected response workflow. Your administrator or 911Cellular Support can review the event.
- Timer will not start: Check your login, connectivity, selected duration, and successful start confirmation.
- Cannot extend or resolve: Check connectivity, reopen the app if necessary, and confirm the change succeeded. Closing the timer screen does not itself end a registered timer.
- Contact did not get a message: Verify contact information and ask your administrator to check the configured message workflow and any available delivery status.
- Expected response incident is missing: Have your administrator check whether Emergency Services was enabled and selected and whether location eligibility and incident routing requirements were met.
